One of the most common questions I hear is:
"When should I book my vacation?"
The answer? It depends on where you're going—but one thing is almost always true: waiting rarely saves money anymore.
Gone are the days when travelers could count on scoring amazing last-minute deals. Today's travel industry works very differently. Airlines, cruise lines, and hotels use dynamic pricing, meaning prices fluctuate based on demand. As cabins, rooms, and flights fill up, prices usually increase—not decrease.
If you're planning a vacation in 2026 or beyond, here's a general timeline to help you know when to start planning.
Cruises: 12–18 Months Ahead
Cruises are one of the easiest vacations to plan early—and one of the best values when you do.
Booking early often means:
The best cabin selection
Better pricing
More dining and excursion availability
Lower deposits during promotions
Extra onboard credits or perks on select sailings
This is especially true for popular itineraries like Alaska, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean during holidays, and river cruises, which often sell out months in advance.
Europe: 9–12 Months Ahead
Dreaming of Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, or a European river cruise?
Start planning early.
Hotels in the most desirable locations book up quickly, especially during spring and fall. Early planning also gives you more flexibility with flights, unique accommodations, guided tours, and train schedules.
You'll have more choices—and often better pricing—than travelers who wait until the last minute.
All-Inclusive Resorts: 6–9 Months Ahead
Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, honeymoon, family vacation, or adults-only escape to Mexico or the Caribbean, booking several months ahead usually provides the best combination of price and availability.
Planning early also means:
Better room categories
More nonstop flight options
Time to make restaurant reservations
Less stress as your departure date approaches
If you're traveling during spring break, Christmas, or other school holidays, I recommend booking even earlier.
Group Trips: 12–18 Months Ahead
Traveling with friends, family, or joining a hosted group?
The earlier, the better.
Group space is limited, and airlines, hotels, and cruise lines often release inventory gradually. Planning well in advance gives everyone time to budget, request vacation time, and make payments over several months.
It's also much easier to coordinate everyone's schedules before calendars fill up.
Holiday Travel: Book as Soon as You Know
If you're traveling over Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, or other major holidays, don't wait.
Holiday travel consistently has the highest demand of the year, and prices typically increase as availability decreases.
So...Do Last-Minute Deals Still Exist?
Sometimes—but they're becoming increasingly rare.
Last-minute pricing is often based on whatever inventory remains, which may not be the itinerary, hotel, cabin category, or flight schedule you actually want.
If you're flexible about destination, dates, and accommodations, you might find a deal.
If you have specific travel dates, want a balcony cabin, or have your heart set on a particular resort or destination, waiting can actually cost you more.
Why Planning Early Saves More Than Money
Booking early isn't just about getting a better price.
It also gives you:
More choices
Better flight schedules
Preferred hotel locations
The best cruise cabins
Time to budget your vacation
Less planning stress
More excitement as you count down to your trip
Planning ahead turns vacation planning into part of the experience instead of a last-minute scramble.
My Recommendation as a Travel Advisor
After helping travelers plan vacations for the past five years, I've found that the happiest clients aren't the ones who waited for the "perfect deal."
They're the ones who booked early, secured exactly what they wanted, and enjoyed the peace of mind that comes with knowing everything is taken care of.
If you're thinking about traveling in the next year—even if you're not sure exactly where you want to go—now is a great time to start the conversation.
Together, we can explore your options, compare destinations, and build a vacation that fits your style, your budget, and your travel dreams.
Ready to Start Planning?
Whether you're dreaming of an Alaska cruise, a European adventure, an adults-only Caribbean escape, or your next bucket-list vacation, I'd love to help you make it happen.
The earlier we start planning, the more options you'll have—and that's one of the best travel investments you can make.
