If you’re like most Americans, you probably start every new year promising to finally use all your paid time off… yet somehow those days slip away.
Let’s change that in 2026. With a little strategic planning, you can turn a few PTO days into long weekends — and even week-long escapes — just by aligning with U.S. federal holidays and weekends.
Here’s how to maximize your vacation time in 2026, quarter by quarter

Quarter 1: Winter Refresh (January – March)
Start your year off right with quick getaways or warm-weather escapes.
New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1→ Take Friday, January 2 off for a 4-day weekend (Jan 1–4).
Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 19→ Built-in 3-day weekend.
Presidents’ Day – Monday, February 16→ Take Friday, February 13 off for a 4-day break (Feb 13–16).
Perfect for: Caribbean cruises, ski weekends, or a relaxing spa retreat.

Quarter 2: Spring Into Travel (April – June)
Spring brings longer days — and perfect timing for bigger adventures.
Memorial Day – Monday, May 25→ Take Friday, May 22 off for a 4-day weekend (May 22–25).→ Add Tuesday–Wednesday (May 26–27) to stretch it to 6 days off using 3 PTO days.
Juneteenth National Independence Day – Friday, June 19→ Holiday falls on a Friday = automatic 3-day weekend (Jun 19–21).→ Add Thursday, June 18 for a 4-day trip.
Perfect for: Europe in bloom, river cruises, or national park getaways.

Quarter 3: Summer Stretch (July – September)
Make summer your season of adventure with extended weekends and sun-filled escapes.
Independence Day (Observed) – Friday, July 3→ Take Thursday, July 2 or Monday, July 6 for 4–5 days off.
Labor Day – Monday, September 7→ Take Friday, September 4 off for a 4-day weekend (Sep 4–7).→ Add Tuesday, September 8 for 5 full days of vacation.
Perfect for: Beach vacations, Mediterranean cruises, or Alaskan adventures.

Quarter 4: Fall & Festive Escapes (October – December)
Finish the year strong — whether you want cozy fall vibes or festive winter fun.
Columbus Day – Monday, October 12→ Built-in 3-day weekend.
Veterans Day – Wednesday, November 11→ Take Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 12 off for 6 days using only 2 PTO days.
Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 26→ Take Friday, November 27 off for a 4-day weekend (Nov 26–29).→ Add Monday, November 30 for a 5-day trip.
Christmas Day – Friday, December 25→ Take Monday–Thursday (Dec 21–24) for 8 days off using 4 PTO days.
Perfect for: European Christmas markets, tropical getaways, or family holiday escapes.
